Already Automated? Here’s How You Can Go Even Further

Your company may already be several years into its automation journey. This means you may find yourselves envious when looking at newer automation solutions like 1Desk, 1RPA or Amelia. The good news is that you can tap into the power of these systems without starting over from scratch.

A recent survey of global enterprises found that “highly automated” companies were six times more likely to report revenue growth of more than 15% compared to less-automated organizations. That’s a hopeful piece of data for those companies beginning their automation journeys. However, decision makers should also expect to encounter unforeseen challenges that will require a constant reevaluation of approach, including potentially shifting away from the solutions that they began their journeys with.

Case in point: Robotic Process Automation (RPA). A recent Deloitte study found that companies are already reporting high rates of success with their RPA deployments — 86% said their productivity expectations were met or exceeded, while 61% were able to reduce overhead costs. However, the RPA story is more complex when you consider that a PwC survey found that only 11% of companies have adopted RPA widely across the enterprise and only 3% have deployed more than 50 bots. The relatively timid scope of these initially successful implementations reveals that enterprises are encountering stumbling blocks that their existing automation technologies cannot easily manage.

The good news is that shifting automation strategies doesn’t mean starting over from scratch. In this post, we will present two ways that enterprises can kickstart their existing automation strategies using IPsoft’s market-leading AI solutions 1Desk, 1RPA and Amelia to provide continuous gains.

Step Up, Don’t Start Over

If your company is running into the limits of your current automation solution, e.g. difficulties repairing malfunctioning RPAs, you may be able to simply translate your existing bots into a more advanced system.

1Desk’s 1RPA, for example, is able to leverage and reuse existing automation designs to create faster, more efficient bots. This ease-of-transition is important, because 1RPA offers several benefits over traditional systems. Notably 1RPA’s industry-leading Natural Language Reading (NLR) allows bots to read and understand unstructured text, which not only helps experienced automation engineers be more productive, but empowers non-engineers to craft bots with little training (you can see a tutorial on how easy it is to build an automation here).

1RPA’s potential to accelerate the production of bots is also enhanced by the solution’s dynamic scalability. Most traditional vendors charge for every concurrent RPA process, while 1RPA’s bots are as scalable as the compute power that you provide it. This means that you will never be charged extra for spikes in traffic, which is beneficial in a highly automated environment.

Connecting Everything

If your company has already benefitted from automation in a specific department or business area, imagine how much potential lies in implementing automated workflows that span multiple business areas. Unfortunately, this functionality is not easily supported in the way that most companies organize themselves today.

Over time, companies implement various solutions predesigned to address the needs of an individual department (e.g. a system for HR, another system for accounts receivable, a completely unrelated one for facilities, etc.), which means automations based in one system probably don’t extend beyond its silo. To complicate matters further, there may even be multiple platforms within a single department (e.g. an IT department may have separate solutions for CMDB, ITSM, IT support, etc.).

The far more efficient automation strategy would be to implement a comprehensive end-to-end solution like 1Desk, rather than a patchwork best-of-breed approach. End-to-end automation allows companies to build complex automations across departments which eliminates tribal knowledge and reliance on multiple vendors. Furthermore, 1Desk comes standard with our digital colleague Amelia who allows any user to access the automation framework through her conversational interface.

Most companies did not begin their automation journeys with the intent of creating silos between and within departments, but that’s where they ended up because there were no unifying solutions like 1Desk available at the time. That being said, many companies may choose to continue with this best-of-breed approach, due to time and budget constraints. Fortunately, 1Desk easily links into existing solutions’ APIs to unify all the disparate systems into a central unified automation framework.

With 1Desk, users from any department are empowered to create automations which cross silos. For example, an HR manager could simply tell Amelia, “Please reserve a new laptop and three external displays for every new hire on the marketing team,” and 1Desk will translate this intent into an automation with the IT department’s existing hardware management system. The important takeaway here is that the HR worker was able to create a new automation with little-to-no human intermediation and without being trained on the nuances of the IT department’s systems.

Every step forward in automation helps bring about a more efficient world. The good news is that automation solutions are constantly improving and becoming more efficient all the time. The even better news is that there isn’t a need to replace your existing automations from scratch each time a better solution comes along.
